Founder and Project Manager ## Andriy Kovalenko Andriy grew up around wood. His father ran a woodworking shop in Lviv, and that's where he learned cabinetry. He came to Toronto in 1998, and his first job here was helping on custom millwork in a Bloor Street West cabinet shop. Within a year he was leading installs. By 2003 he was doing stair and railing work for an Etobicoke custom home builder. The builder kept telling him the same thing: there were far more homeowners who wanted their existing stairs fixed than the new-build side could ever handle. So in 2004, Andriy started Staircase Renovation Toronto with one truck, working out of his Etobicoke home. His first ten clients came as referrals from that Bloor Street shop, all in The Kingsway and Sunnylea. Three years later he had three crews working across the GTA. Today he still runs every estimate himself, because he thinks the person who prices a job should be the person answerable for it. He supervises curved and specialty staircase installs in person. Straight stair installs are led by senior crew leads, each of whom trained under him for at least five years before running a job on their own. Within a year he is leading installs. 3. 2003 Subcontracting stair and railing work for an Etobicoke custom home builder, where renovation staircase demand outpaces new builds. 4. 2004 Launches Staircase Renovation Toronto as a one-truck operation from his Etobicoke home. Two people is the safe way to carry treads and glass, and it's fast enough to finish most recapping jobs in three to five days and most vinyl capping in one. There are no subcontracted strangers in your home: the crew that shows up works for us. Straight staircases are cut in our Etobicoke shop to your measured opening. Curved staircases are templated and fitted on site. Several Toronto contractors ship prefabricated stairs from out-of-province suppliers, which limits custom fit.
