A new rail is only as solid as the newel it's fixed to. We anchor newels with a lag bolt into the floor joist below, which fixes the wobble at the source. What is a gooseneck fitting? It's the curved piece that lets a handrail rise over a landing newel and continue at a new height. It keeps the rail continuous instead of stopping and starting at each post.
