What Is an Iron Baluster Replacement?
A baluster is one of the vertical bars between the treads and the handrail. Builders call them spindles. In most GTA homes built from about 1985 to 2005, they’re turned or square wood spindles, often painted white under an oak handrail. An iron baluster replacement swaps each wood spindle for a steel baluster with a powder-coated finish, while keeping the handrail and newel posts if they’re in good shape.
It’s one of the biggest visual changes you can make to a staircase for the money. The stair reads as updated from the front door, and the open look of thin iron bars lets more light through the foyer.
The work is precise more than it is heavy. Each old spindle is cut out. The holes in the tread and rail are filled or reused. New pockets are drilled at the right angle for the stair pitch. Each baluster is cut to length, set in two-part epoxy, and finished with a shoe at the base that hides the hole.

When Should You Replace Wood Spindles?
Replacing spindles makes sense when:
- The spindles are loose, cracked or rattle when you touch them.
- The paint on painted spindles keeps chipping.
- You’re recapping the stairs and want the railing to match the new look.
- You’re selling and want the foyer to photograph well.
- The spacing is wider than 4 inches, which is a real safety issue with small children.

The 4-Inch Sphere Rule
Ontario’s building code limits openings in a stair guard so a 4-inch (100 mm) sphere can’t pass through. That applies between balusters and along the bottom of the guard where it meets each tread. We lay out every run before drilling, so the gaps are even and compliant. On long runs we mark every baluster position with tape first, and you can see the spacing before any hole is drilled.
