What Is Vinyl Stair Capping?
Vinyl stair capping means covering the treads and risers of an existing staircase with luxury vinyl plank (LVP) instead of tearing the stairs out. The structure stays. What changes is every surface you see and step on.
A proper install has three parts. First, the prep: carpet, pad, tack strips and staples come off, the old rounded nose is cut back, and any tread that moves gets screwed to the stringer. Second, the metal sub-nose extrusion goes on the front edge of each tread. Third, the vinyl tread, riser and bullnose stair nose are cut to size and bonded with urethane adhesive. The metal underneath is what makes the edge feel solid. Cheaper installs skip it and glue a vinyl nose straight to the old tread, which is why those edges start to lift.
Done well, vinyl capping looks like a finished factory stair. It suits homes where you’ve already put LVP on the floors and want the stairs to match, and it suits rentals where painted wood or carpet keeps getting wrecked.
Types of Vinyl Stair Capping
Not every vinyl stair job is the same. These are the four versions we install most often in the GTA.
Carpet to vinyl on main stairs
The most common job. Carpeted builder stairs in 1980s to 2000s homes in Mississauga, Newmarket and North York usually have plywood or spruce treads underneath. Vinyl turns them into a hard-surface stair that matches the new floor.
Painted or worn wood to vinyl
Older painted stairs chip at the nose. Vinyl covers the whole tread and riser, so there’s no paint edge left to chip.
Waterproof basement stair capping
Basement stairs see humidity, wet boots and sometimes minor flooding. An SPC waterproof core holds up where carpet mildews and some wood products swell.
Rental and multi-unit turnovers
Landlords and property managers often cap several identical staircases. We standardize the product so any single tread can be replaced later.

Staircases under 8 steps have an $1,800 minimum, because setup and cutting time doesn’t shrink much for a short flight. Material is typically about 60% of the price and labour and finishing about 40%. That’s why bringing your own leftover flooring can lower the number.

When Is Vinyl Capping the Right Choice?
Vinyl capping makes the most sense when:
- Your floors are already LVP and the stairs are the last carpeted surface in the house.
- The stairs are structurally sound: no cracked treads, no stringer movement, no big dips.
- You’re turning over a rental and need the stairs back the same day.
- The stairs go to a basement where moisture rules out carpet.
- Your budget sits closer to $2,000 to $4,000 than to a full renovation.
It’s not the right choice when the stairs underneath are failing. Vinyl will telegraph a soft or bouncing tread. In that case we’ll suggest stair tread replacement for a few bad steps, or a full rebuild if the stringers are the problem.

Hardwood is the better fit next to hardwood floors or on a showpiece main staircase. Vinyl wins on speed, moisture and matching LVP. DIY kits look easy online, but the nose detail and the prep are where most attempts go wrong.
How We Prep the Stairs So the Vinyl Stays Put
Most vinyl stair complaints come from bad prep, not bad product. On every job we remove all staples and tack strips, cut the nose flush, and drive structural screws through any tread that moves into the stringer. That’s also when we fix squeaks. We then fill low spots, sand ridges and vacuum so the adhesive bonds to clean wood.
The metal sub-nose extrusion goes on next, then the vinyl tread, then the riser. We work from the bottom step up so the crew never stands on fresh adhesive.
