What you notice: The stair in an older house is steep, the treads are shallow, and the handrail sits too low to grab comfortably.
Why it happens here: Northeast Old Aurora is a heritage district of late 19th and early 20th century homes, built long before today's code on rise, run and handrail height. A cap adds height to each tread, which can push a steep stair further out of line.
