What you notice: The back deck stairs have split stringers and cupped treads, and the whole flight shifts a little when you walk down.
Why it happens here: Most of Brooklin's newer subdivisions went up between the mid-1990s and early 2000s, so their original pressure-treated deck stairs are now 20 to 30 years old. A rebuild needs a Whitby building permit and a guard where the drop is over 600 mm.
